The red carpet at the 59th annual Emmy Awards wasn't the only thing popping with color. Gowns dipped in bold blues, reds and yellows were the star of the show.
America Ferrera, usually seen in braces and the most hideous clothing on "Ugly Betty," did a complete turn around last night in a bold cobalt blue, strapless column gown. Ali Larter of "Heroes" was sassy-chic in a draped strapless Reem Acra red dress, while Minnie Driver of "The Riches" stepped out in a figure-flattering yellow gown.
Vanessa Williams of "Ugly Betty" made a daring statement with a dress full of plumage. But it was the celadon color that made her fall in love with it.
"This color is magnificient," says Williams. "When the announcements for nominations were made, Kevin Hall said he had a gown especially for me. No one had seen it or worn it."
Although color was prominent, those who opted for paler hues and classic black and white still made a statement.
Katherine Heigl has a track record of glamming it up on the red carpet -- and last night was was no exception. She took the award for best supporting actress in a drama in a flourishing white Zac Posen gown that invoked the style of retro Hollywood.
Debra Messing, Sandra Oh and Glenn Close were the best representation of classic charm. Messing, in a tri-tiered black and white Ralph Lauren gown was stunning, while Oh continued the strapless trend and poured into a perfectly fit black and white Bottega Veneta dress.
As for Close, she was elegant in a black halter dress that showed off her toned arms.
There may have been many glamorous hits, but there were many misses as well. Edie Falco of "The Sopranos" wore a simple black gown that became distracting with detailing that looked like she was being attacked by creepy crawlies. From the neck up, Jenna Fischer, who plays the homely secretary from "The Office" looked beautiful. But from the neck down, the big bow on her bodice made her gown look like an '80s prom dress gone awry.
# Best trends: Bold colors, ornate gowns, strapless frocks and classic elegance.
# Best cleavage: Christina Aguilera's Valentino gown may have flattered her new baby bump, but her cleavage definitely stole the show.
# Worst hair: Ellen Pompeo wins this award the second year in a row with her hair-raising pompadour.
# Most painful looking shoes: Sandra Oh claimed that her Bottega Veneta strap-happy shoes were comfortable, but they looked like S&M garb.
# Best use of a gray suit: Zachary Quinto chose to stay away from the classic black and white tux and wore a sleek Alexander McQueen suit.
# Best dressed: Katherine Heigl had the most complete look with a flawless image of old Hollywood.
# Worst dressed: Hayden Panettiere was not a hero in that poofy madness made by Marc Bouwer.
