Stars and their stylists reined themselves in at last night's Emmy Awards, going for the classic strapless look with the modern twist of unadorned decollete.
Cream and white seemed to be the new black, with many of the women wearing one or the other in a variety of styles. A prime example was Debra Messing, a knockout in a strapless Ralph Lauren gown of white with a band of black at the top and each of the tiers near the bottom trimmed in black. Her hair was smooth and pushed behind the ear on one side to reveal her dangling Cartier earrings.
Songstress Christina Aguilera, who changed later to duet with Tony Bennett, didn't go strapless but she did walk the red carpet in a cream number with black straps and a black bow in front. Her platinum tresses were swept back in a style reminiscent of Kim Novak in "Vertigo."
As is the case 99 percent of the time with Ms. Aguilera, her surgically-enhanced and possibly pregnancy-enhanced breasts played a prominent role in her look.
Also doing the strapless cream gown thing was TV Guide red carpet host and former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Lisa Rinna, who accented her slit-front frock with nothing more than toned arms, a great tan and of course, those famous full lips. Speaking of lips, "Grey's Anatomy" star and Emmy winner last night, Katherine Heigl, used bright red lipstick on hers to make them stand out against her white off-the-shoulder Zac Posen gown.
But for some reason the lips didn't quite work, kind of like the floral-print lawn-party dress Elizabeth Perkins sported and Marcia Cross's pale partially-pleated whatever that went in too many directions and got no help from those huge turquoise earrings.
Eva Longoria looked great in a gold short dress (there were only one or two) that plunged in the front in the front and dipped so low in the back we saw a bit of a tatoo and thankfully nothing else. But what was "Heroes" cutie Hayden Paniterre wearing? It looked like somebody sewed the drapes to a casket lining and told her it was couture. It was way too much dress for such a little girl.
There were splashes of color, and one of the brightest was "Ugly Betty's" America Ferrera in an electric blue strapless gown accented with a sparkly belt, which kind of grew on us the more we saw it.
If anyone could pull off a seafoam green gown that was 90 percent feathers, Ms. Ferrera's co-star, Vanessa Williams, could and did. She definitely stood out in a strapless Kevin Hall creation, which she said he had called and offered to her after the nominations were announced.
Ms. Williams kept her hair simple and did not repeat the poodle hair fiasco of the Golden Globes.
Jaw droppingly-gorgeous in red was "Heroes" star Ali Larter, whose strapless gown gathered at the bust and showed off that to-die-for bod.
As for the men, most of them got the memo about the black tux, white shirt and black tie, straight or bow, and most looked great. Some changed up the tie color: Joey Fatone did champagne while Dennis Leary wore a silver tie. Some guys, like Wayne Brady, pulled the triple black, black tie, tux and shirt.
Obviously somebody should have schooled "Lost" star Terry O'Quinn. He showed up with a pink shiny shirt and a black tie accented with sparkles. He didn't look that great sitting in the audience, and we're sure he probably wished he'd worn anything else when he won as best supporting actor in a drama and had to take to the stage in that mess.
