Artist: Christina Aguilera Album: Back to Basics Label: Sony BMG Rating: 7/10
True to form, Ms Aguilera, the musical chameleon, has emerged as yet another female entertainer cliche.
Having already conquered the market for a sweet teen crooner, then Dirrty’ Floozy, she has indeed gone Back to Basics. With bouffant peroxided curls and a crimson pout, Christina masters the glamour of old Hollywood with her trademark brand of sassy pop and it truly fits her like a glove.
She fits it so well in fact, that Back to Basics hit double platinum and Ain’t No Other Man snatched her a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Pop Performance.
The album touches upon flirty, get-up-and-dance tracks like Candyman and slower, emotive tracks like Oh Mother, but mostly covers her distinctly girly pop like Ain’t No Other Man and Still Dirrty.
If you’re after music that will engage and stimulate you, you’re not after Christina, but this album could win a trophy for being the perfect soundtrack to a hen’s night. Such an enigmatic voice can become tiring after a while, so it’s not an album that will be left on repeat. The boys had their turn with the infamous Dirrty, and now, swelling with hot jazz notes, this one is definitely for the ladies.
