NEW YORK — Lady Gaga certainly made a fashion statement — or four — at the VMAs on Sunday night. The new princess of pop donned four very original and different numbers that had the fashion community buzzing the next day. Is Lady Gaga a new fashion icon? Maybe not yet, but experts MTV News spoke with at Fashion Week can agree that she certainly is fashion-forward — and on her way to icon status.
Celebrity stylist Robert Verdi said Gaga’s debut at the VMAs has her poised to join some of the greatest women in pop music. “I actually love her,” he said. “I think there have been these moments in the canon of fashion history and music history that have been very important and are marked by Cher, Madonna and now Lady Gaga. I think the all-white one [from her performance] is interesting. It’s kind of a modern-day version of Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ [look].”
Keith Pollock, executive editor for Interview online, added that Gaga, much like those women before her, is making people in the entertainment industry have to step up their fashion game. “It’s wonderful to see that she’s willing to take a risk on the carpet because there are so many people who are afraid,” he said. “Lady Gaga seems to go for the extreme and I think it really works for her, in her favor. Lady Gaga has reinvigorated pop-culture style — what performers are wearing. I think her approach to fashion is quite dramatic, and it’s always exciting to see what she’s going to wear.”
“I thought [her outfits] were all interesting and exciting, but I think it’s about her different ways of keeping people talking about her and interested in her,” Kendall (who did not give her last name) told MTV News. “And it obviously works and she has her own style. It’s different but it’s exciting. I would call it costumey.”
