Christina Aguilera has spoken out about how suriving her abusive childhood gave her the determination to become a famous singer.
Christina and her mother Shelly allegedly suffered physical abuse at the hand of her father Fausto when she was a small child.
"I witnessed a lot of unpleasant things - a lot of pushing and shoving and fighting and quarrelling," she told Contactmusic.
"Growing up I did not feel safe. Feeling powerless is the worst feeling in the world.
"I turned to singing as an outlet. The pain at home is where my love for music came from."
Her mum eventually left her husband after finding a four-year-old Christina bleeding following one of his attacks.
Shelly said in a recent TV interview, "I scooped her up and said, 'Oh my God. What's wrong?' She told me, 'Daddy wanted to take a nap and I made too much noise'."
