Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Madonna
The audience of MTV’s 20th annual Video Music Awards in 2003 knew they were in for something a little bit different in the opening act, but few were prepared for what they saw. Spears and Christina opened the VMA show dressed like brides singing Madonna’s classic hit Like a Virgin, before the Material Girl stepped out of a wedding cake wearing a modified tuxedo. It culminated in a French kiss between Madonna and Britney, and then between Madonna and Christina.
Shilpa Shetty and Richard Gere
A public display of affection between actors Shetty and Gere caused uproar in India where such behaviour is taboo and effigies of the two stars were burnt in the street.
The Pretty Woman star, 57, first kissed Shilpa, 31, on the hand at a rally in New Delhi. But he then grabbed the embarrassed Big Brother star, whisked her towards the floor and repeatedly kissed her as she tried to fend him off.
Beth and Margaret
Brookside not only featured the first gay characters in soap, it also led the way by showing the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss.
On Christmas Eve 1993, Anna Friel as Beth Jordache caused a nationwide gasp by having an eight-second smooch with neighbour, Margaret. Emmerdale followed Brookside’s lead two years later and went on to feature a lesbian wedding. On the other side of the Atlantic, a landmark was reached in 1991 when L.A Law’s C.J. kissed a female colleague on screen.
