There's a new look to both of Billboard's pan-European sales charts, as Christina Aguilera debuts at No. 1 on the European Albums listing with "Bionic" (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) and soccer World Cup fever engulfs the singles market. K'naan's "Wavin' Flag" (A&M/Universal), Coca-Cola's official anthem of the tournament in South Africa, jumps 5-1 on European Hot 100 Singles.
Aguilera was last on the European countdown in 2008, when her "Keeps Gettin' Better" compilation debuted at No. 12. Her last studio set "Back To Basics" spent its first two weeks at No. 1 Europe-wide in 2006. "Bionic" is off to a No. 1 start in the United Kingdom, No. 2 in Switzerland, No. 3 in Austria, No. 4 in Spain and Ireland, No. 6 in Germany and Holland, and rises 16-4 in the Belgian region of Flanders. The U.K. news is somewhat tempered by the fact tat the album tops that chart with only 24,000 sales, the lowest for a No. 1 in the market for eight years, compared to an opening 84,000 for "Basics."
Katie Melua's "The House" (Dramatico), which opened atop European Albums two weeks ago, spends a second week at No. 2. It not only retains its No. 1 positions in Poland and Wallony but moves back 2-1 in Switzerland and 5-3 in Denmark. The album that replaced it at the summit last week, Jack Johnson's "To The Sea" (Brushfire/Universal Island), dips to No. 3, after falling from first place to No. 6 in the United Kingdom and No. 4 in Switzerland. It's also down 4-8 in Germany and 4-9 in Austria.
Lady Gaga's "The Fame" (Interscope/Universal) is a non-mover overall at No. 4, its highest individual ranking being at No. 2 in Ireland, where as in many territories it's listed jointly with the "Fame Monster" EP. AC/DC's "Iron Man 2" soundtrack (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment) is down 3-5 on the composite chart, but rises 6-2 in Hungary, 6-4 in Sweden, 9-7 in Wallony, 9-8 in Switzerland and 11-10 in Ireland, and holds at No. 3 in Flanders.
The other new entry on the pan-European survey, at No. 6, is "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" (Atlantic/Warner Music), which starts at No. 1 in Austria, No. 4 in Germany, No. 9 in Switzerland and climbs 20-10 in Wallony. It also debuts at No. 1 in the U.K.'s separate compilations chart, on sales of 23,000. The film opens in many European territories, as in the U.S., on June 30, and in early July in others.
Lena Meyer-Landrut's "My Cassette Player" (USFO/Universal) slips 6-7 across Europe as her Eurovision Song Contest winner "Satellite" falls from the European Hot 100 Singles summit to No. 6. The album is still No. 1 in Germany (where the single descends 1-3) but is down 1-5 in Austria and 3-6 in Switzerland. The single remains at No. 1 in Sweden, but crashes 1-8 in Denmark.
French DJ-artist David Guetta's "One Love" (Gum/Virgin/EMI) makes its latest resurgence, 12-8, in its 41st week on European Albums. That's the highest ranking since last November for an album that was No. 1 for a week last September and now races 11-1 in Spain, 17-4 in Wallony 15-10 in Hungary and reappears at No. 53 in the United Kingdom. The catalyst is Guetta's latest hit single "Gettin' Over You," with Chris Willis and featuring Fergie and LMFAO, which climbed 41-1 on the U.K. chart last week and falls to No. 4 there, but is up 2-3 in Italy, 7-4 in Austria and 10-5 in Ireland.
Michael Bublé falls 7-9 on the composite list with "Crazy Love" (Reprise/Warner Music), despite enjoying a 19-8 jump in Portugal, while Alicia Keys' "The Element of Freedom" (J/Sony Music Entertainment) is on the rise again, 14-10 in its 26th overall week. It's up 5-2 in the United Kingdom and 22-20 in Portugal.
The K'naan track moves the top of European Hot 100 Singles after rising 2-1 in Germany and Switzerland, 16-3 in the United Kingdom, 6-4 in Holland, 18-10 in Italy and holding at No. 1 in Austria.
It beats another soccer-themed song to the European summit, as world football body FIFA's official song of the World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) by Shakira featuring Freshlyground, rises 9-2. Both are beaten to the U.K. peak by the unofficial novelty track "Shout" (Syco/Sony Music Entertainment) by Shout For England featuring Dizzee Rascal and comic actor James Corden, new at No. 1 on four-day sales of 113,000.
