Christina Aguilera Strips Away Gimmicks (And Her Shirt) In “You Lost Me”
What a difference a second single makes. Wrought with over the top images pushing the boundaries of decency, the video for Christina Aguilera’s “Not Myself Tonight,” the first from her latest album, Bionic, was a gimmicky — albeit fun to look at — cry for attention that only worked in the short-term. Sure, we all talked about the Madonna-ish imagery when the video premiered, but it did nothing to make the actual single a hit.
In stark (and much welcomed) contrast, the subdued video for the Sia-penned “You Lost Me” focuses on the meaning of the song with visuals befitting of its lyrics. With the help of director Anthony Mandler, Christina takes us through every phase of an emotional breakup. Sprawled across the floor in a dark and dirty room, Christina shows her deep despair. Rage over the relationship’s demise is manifested in the pounding of her ex’s chest in a room filtered with orange lighting. Finally, she strips off her shirt and, with it, the pain as the bright light comes in. She’s so over it.
It’s yet to be seen if “You Lost Me” will be Xtina’s breakout hit from Bionic, but with the song and video done right, it should be.
