When a compilation advertises itself as a bumper pack of hits – 43 spread over two discs in this particular case – there really shouldn’t be much to discuss as regards content!
They are, after all, all chart entries; their success forever embedded in the annals of pop music for future generations to revisit and remark (favourably or not) upon!
Fortunately, this particular volume of the popular NOW series has kept up the momentum expressed in recent editions, balancing the more obvious commercial tunes against a minority of less glitzy but equally appealing songs from the “guitar” bands.
The more prominent attractions are obviously the most commercial tracks, such as Rihanna’s chart-topping Jay-Z endorsed Umbrella, which has consolidated her position as the UK’s top urban diva. Other cool cuts come courtesy of Amerie’, Beyonce and Shakira, Akon, Timbaland and former Sugababe Mutya Buena. Beyond the urban circuit, singles from the likes of Avril Lavigne, Mika, Paolo Nutini, Calvin Harris, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias and Alex Gaudino represent pop’s broader spectrum, but the highlights here have to be Mark Ronson’s wonderful remake of The Smith’s Stop Me, Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black, Snow Patrol’s Signal Fire and Klaxons’ It’s Not Over Yet. Not so impressive are Natasha Bedingfield’s I Want To Have Your Babies and Robin Thicke’s comeback track, Lost Without U – the rest thankfully flows along quite smoothly!
